چکیده

The amount of unwanted network traffic on the Internet is constantly increasing and it seems that currently there are no methods to identify and filter out such traffic. Before a solution can be proposed, it must be understood why such problem exists. Unwanted network traffic is caused simply because there is profit behind it and currently there is not a real way to catch miscreants who abuse the Internet and compromised hosts. This paper presents technical solutions to restrict and to filter out unwanted traffic. First we will discuss simple solutions that should be deployed by every operator or network administrator and then we will look into more sophisticated solutions and solutions that are brand new or even in the development phase of their life cycle.

Feature Extraction to Identify Network Traffic with Considering Packet Loss Effects

There are huge petitions of network traffic coming from various applications on Internet. In dealing with this volume of network traffic, network management plays a crucial rule. Traffic classification is a basic technique which is used by Internet service providers (ISP) to manage network resources and to guarantee Internet security. In addition, growing bandwidth usage, at one hand, and limit...

Classification of encrypted traffic for applications based on statistical features

Traffic classification plays an important role in many aspects of network management such as identifying type of the transferred data, detection of malware applications, applying policies to restrict network accesses and so on. Basic methods in this field were using some obvious traffic features like port number and protocol type to classify the traffic type. However, recent changes in applicat...

Privacy-Preserving Collaborative Anomaly Detection

Unwanted traffic is a major concern in the Internet today. Unwanted traffic includes Denial of Service attacks, worms, and spam. Identifying and mitigating unwanted traffic costs businesses many billions of USD every year. The process of identifying this traffic is called anomaly detection, and Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS’es) are among the most prevalent techniques. IDS’es, such as Snort, ...

Tracking the Role of Adversaries in Measuring Unwanted Traffic

Measurements related to security are being carried out on many sites on the Internet at network ingress points, between specific points on the Internet, and across the wide area Internet. The goals range from identifying sources of and possibly filtering unwanted traffic, to characterizing and coming up with new mechanisms for deterring attacks. Most of the measurements do not systematically co...

Reducing Unwanted Traffic in a Backbone Network

This paper studies the techniques a backbone ISP can employ to reduce unwanted traffic on its network. For this purpose, we extract likely sources of exploit (thus unwanted) traffic from packet traces collected on backbone links using an Internet traffic behavior profiling methodology we developed earlier. We first study the characteristics of exploit traffic from several aspects, such as netwo...
